The World Cup final happens this Sunday, July 11th. Hopefully you already knew that. If not, read our World Cup final preview and get yourself up to speed.
Everyone else, I have two simple questions for you:
1. Netherlands or Spain: Who do you think will win the World Cup? 2. Why?
So we’re not accused of precition cowardice, Chris and myself pick our winners below:
1. Chris: 2-1 Spain. 2. Why: There’s something in the ability of the Dutch midfield to break up play, but there’s something even more in the ability of the Spanish attack – the one… Continue reading
The scoreline makes this game look like a thriller. The scoreline is lying. Well, not lying. This game really did finish 3-2 to Netherlands. It just wasn’t quite as exciting as you’d think. What it did have was a couple of superb goals, including maybe the goal of the tournament from Gio van Bronckhurst, and one rather controverisal goal from Wesley Sneijder.
All five goals below…
0-1 Van Bronckhorst 18′
1-1 Forlan 41′
1-2 Sneijder 71′
1-3 Robben 73′
2-3 Pereira 90′
Yep, Arjen Robben scored a header. Seemed that the game would finish 3-1 but then Maxi… Continue reading
THE BIG PICTURE Many will be shocked to see Uruguay still alive and kicking, and just one win away from the World Cup final. Theoretically South America’s fifth best team (based on World qualification) la celeste have outlasted Chile, Paraguay, Brazil and Argentina to be CONMEBOL’s sole remaining representative. Some might even be annoyed at Uruguay’s presence here, since it’s a direct result of Luis Suarez’ handball (since Adiyiah’s header was definitely going in). Good news for those people is that Suarez is suspended for this game as a result of that handball, which breaks up that fearsome Forlan/Suarez combo… Continue reading
THE BIG PICTURE Netherlands cruised through the group stage, winning every game and conceding just once. Robin van Persie and Wesley Sneijder have both already scored, and Arjen Robben and his comedy hamstrings made their rather exciting return to action in the final group game against Cameroon. Not to put too much pressure on the Dutch, but they really should be winning this game.
Slovakia seem happy just to be in the last 16. Despite the attacking talents of Marek Hamsik and Miroslav Stoch, Slovakia started World Cup 2010 with a draw against unfancied New Zealand and then a defeat… Continue reading
It wasn’t quite Germany 4-0 Australia, and it wasn’t the fluid Oranje football we were all hoping to enjoy, but the Netherlands made a decent start to World Cup 2010 by comfortably beating Denmark 2-0.
There were chances for both teams early on, with Netherlands Robin van Persie, Wesley Sneijder and Rafael van der Vaart all looking keen if not lethal, and Dennis Rommedahl (still only 31, I feel like he’s been around forever) looking dangerous for Denmark down the right. Goalless at halftime, but then disaster struck for Denmark right at the start of the second half. It… Continue reading
If you’re a Netherlands fan, then you’re going to like this. Even if you’re not, you’ll probably think it’s still a bit good, and wish your team could have one. Dutch design students Bas van de Poel and Daan van Dam have created a reversible Netherlands shirt, with the face of a celebrating player on the inside.
So if you’re wearing one of these when the player scores you just lift the front of the shirt over your head and suddenly you’re wearing that player’s celebrating face. Which sounds a little bit serial killer, but actually looks superb. Here’s how… Continue reading
